So let's get this right;
If Lewis Hamilton wins then it is fixed to create publicity for the new FI BBC coverage Correct
If an Olympian wins then it is fixed so that the BBC can highlight their Olympiucs coverage Correct
It's all a conspiracy Correct
Load of tosh Correct |
And Jenny, there is no money to be made in Postal votes, can't make money after the count has been done, like you can with phone voting.

| Well why not? Constant moaning is boring, I agree, but the occasional whinge never did anyone any harm (and possibly some good in the prevention of high blood pressure, etc). |

Not getting at you Jenny but it just sometimes seems that this forum is full of people who are convinced that the world is against them and that those with power/money/success spend all their time working out how to screw over the poor, exploited general public. You'd think we live in some big totalitarian, corrupt state* the way people on here go on.

With a postal vote, they would know the winner in advance and could make sure to invite him/her and also the runners up etc. If necessary, they could tell the winner in advance, if he/she were a reluctant attendee.
The idea of a shortlist to choose from goes against my grain. Maybe I would like to vote for someone not on the shortlist! Who does the choosing of the short list? (Who guards the guardians?) |
Not sure who chooses the short list!
May be they should put a list of names up on line for people to choose & the 6 top ones then make up the final list & may be someone from out side the all too predictable list like McCoy would get a look in! _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up |

The problem is where do they draw the line?
Rumour has it (& it may be an urban myth) the reason they introduced the short list was to stop "strange" results. Apparantly, the UKs champion angler would win SPOY every year if there was no shortlist. |

I think this must be the case. When I was at uni there was an email campaign to get Justin Fashanu voted in, orchestrated by Gay Times I think.
It must be very difficult to co-ordinate a poll with such a huge number of candidates, where everyone could theoretically vote for their mate in a pub Five A Side team- how many people would it take to try and count up all of those? I think most TV polls are done from the basis of a pre-selected long or shortlist these days. _________________ Be good. Don't trust boys. |

Good idea! I don't know about the UK's top angler - are anglers that interested in SPOTY? But the longer list could prevent that from happening, I guess, and give the public more choice, if not necessarily completely free choice. |

I just wish they would call it Sports Person of the Year, Sports Personality sounds wrong to me,
I should imagine Rebecca Adlington will win it this year, deservedly so too,

Yesterday was a great day in this market! Hamilton didn't win the Grand Prix and The Olympic closing ceremony meant you could get 100/30 on Hamilton to win!!

Hoy or Adlington will win it!
Hoy will have most of Scotland voting for him & a very large number of cycling followers too!
Hamilton might have to put up with winning the F1 title in the same year that Team GB got it right in the Olympics! _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up |

He also likes a punt or two!!
Over the weekend he recommended putting an each way bet on Bradley Wiggins being the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
His rationale behind this is that he is likely to be Britains biggest medal winner in Beijing. My mate reckons he should claim at least 3 gold medals.
Although cycling is still fairly unfashionable, our best Olympian should be there or thereabouts in the public's mind come December.
BW will probably not win the award, but top 3 is a distinct possibility & at 40/1 with some bookies is worth a go and have had a bit on myself.
Thoughts? |
Ok, sorry guys but it looks like I flagged the wrong cyclist!! My mate at UK Sport has been sufficiently repremanded!!
Hoy is now a best priced 9/4 for SPOTY.
Close but no cigar. |

I've moved this from the Olympics sub forum as the Olympics is over but we still have a long way to go(and plenty of twists & turns) until December!
What price Andy Murray if he wins tonight? _________________ We're gonna go up to Maine & eat some clams & lobster,

I think they have a nomination vote on the net and maybe by post too and the 6? sports personalities with the most nominations go through to the final telephone poll. _________________ Black horse apocalypse, death sanitised through credit. |
