I have about 5/6 horses at the moment i like for this race as i tend to look for hurdlers rated 140+ that ran at the year before's festival but 2 at the moment that stick out are Mister Hight & Osana now i have no idea what the aims are for these horses so will wait until the have at least run once and there trainers/owners have talked about there aims, other more obvious ones are Arcalis, Afsoun & De Soto _________________ Forest are Treemendous
Yes i forgot about that, there was something they said about Straw Bear as well was that he will also be sticking to hurldes or go Novice Chasing as he would definetly come into the equation _________________ Forest are Treemendous
I think Johnson could go down the Arkle route with Tidal Bay as he probably thinks this could be his Gold Cup horse of the future I think he will stay the 3 miles but future Gold Cup horses usually go down the Arkle route for the GC. He has won at Cheltenham over 2 miles. 2nd twice of 2 and a half including 2nd in the Ballymore last season. Plenty of talent. 14s available at the moment.
I am looking forward to seeing how Johnsons other horse Arcalis takes to fences.
Obviously its too early as we have not seen most of the ante post market principals over the bigger obstacles but Tidal Bay is definitly one at the moment for the race.

Would you therefore consider a horse like Noland who had had a season off and should be going down this route this season?
Clearly loves the course - not quite at the rating you require, but perhaps due to injury....... I for one would like to see him out soon and I am still hoping to see a star in the making.
I would be interested in Desert Quest for this race if I knew where he was heading - he had prohibitive weight to carry last year, clearly has the speed and rating... but is he going novice chasing?? Maybe a bit too old I guess?

I'm a Noland fan, his hurdles form looks good and I'm looking forward to his come back this christmas, hopefully the injury hasn't taken too much out of him.
Straw Bear seems to be having some bleeding problems, so I can't have him if he went chasing. There's no weight concession for 5yo so it looks as though it will be a totally different betting market this year !!!
Be interesting to see which one of Noel Meade's Nicanor or Aran Concerto goes to the Arkle and which one goes to the RSA !!!

Tom, like you I think that TB could be a serious horse this ytear, whchever race he goes for; I think a lot depends on Arcais; if he takes to it then he will be in the Arkle, and tidal in the RSA [probably]; but otherwisde I think he will have to have a good look at running Tidal i the Arkle where his cruising speed will be too high for the competition [imho] _________________ Geordie_R

There has just been an interview with Claude Duval on ATR, where he claimed Straw Bear would definately be going novice chasing this season. He didn't give any real info, just that he had connections and that the horse had already schooled.
Might be worth noting for those thinking of backing him for the CH or the Arkle for that matter.
mdilla has lured me into an each way bet on Moon Over Miami. Twice a winner at the course over 2 miles, over hurdles and fences at Grade 2 level, good performance Sunday, loves the course, each way yes thanks.

The novice picture is slowly emerging and it would appear that Desert Quest could be following the Twist Magic route via the novice chase they've both won at Fakenham.
As Yaiyam points out you need a horse that attained 140+ as a hurdler, and he fits other pretty key criteria too, on completed starts, and the distance over which he is competing.
Big Bucks is the one drawing the attention, but I feel he has it to prove whereas Desert Quest already has ticks against the right boxes

Didn't Paul Nichols say in the RP today that he didn't think Cheltenham would suit Desert Quest and that Aintree and Punchestown were more his sort of tracks !!!
