Mike

I am a massive Aces fan as you know but just the way he faded up the hill in the RSA Chase has me a bit worried will he last the trip, that was over 3 miles. But I will probably back him each way for the race as I am backing him every time he runs but I think the Ryanair may suit him proper.

Like you I think that noth MWDS and SDM are the best value bets for the Gold cup.

I have small AP portfolio and that includes 5pts on MWDS @ 12-1 and 2pts on SDM at £29 on betfair.

I think that the Arkle has provided some really good pointers to the GC in recent years and must admit that prior to last years I thought 2 miles was going to be too short for MWDS and was glad to be proved wrong.... but was also know that he stays further and has the required turn of foot - watch out Kauto.

As far at SDM - I must be this horses biggest fan - I think he still has huge potential and was gutted to lose the 25-1 GC bet I had ew last year - He loves the track and still has potential to improve.

I may be proved wrong, but I think last season may have taken more out of both ED and KS than their trainers would admit - we just have to look at War of Att and KK to know what winning a GC can do to horses. It is not an easy crown to retain and Best Mate only did so by being protected thoughout the rest of the season.

Roll on March!

Phardy

Yes mate without a doubt Best Mate was plotted for the GC, 2 runs and then off to Cheltenham. Kauto has had 7 runs last season and ED had a lot of runs under his belt. And both could of suffered.

Like you if he retains his ability SDM could be a dark horse of this race and I will be latching on each way. I want to see how he runs first time up, interesting where they will start him.

Like you, the Arkle is a trial for the GC and I was quietly confident that if there was soft ground first day at chelt MWDS would win, why? Because the horse is just pure class. I think King will campaign him similar to Best Mate, Haydock, Kempton, possibly Cheltenham in January and then the GC. I think he is the one to beat.

So no one expects Kicking King or War Of Attrition to come back as good as ever and wipe the floor with the current crop?

The horse I look forward to returning most is Trabolgan, if he retains any kind of ability he would be in with a chance, his weight carrying performance in the hennessey was the performance of the decade. Its a big ask though to come back from such a long lay off.

I doubt any current horse will come back from injury and be good enough to beat Kauto Star, i rate this horse at least 7 lbs better than anything in training. His first run was a superlative effort and all the knockers that are still questioning him are a joke, it was a great performance and one of his best to date.

By this time today I thought I'd be purring over the prospects for Don't Push It in the Gold Cup, but not only did he not show up for the Paddy Power....he didn't even get an entry for the King George. Something doesn't look right to me.

Kauto Star is still the one to beat, and I'd happily brush aside the horses that took him on last March. They're all exposed against KS.

Of the horses that have dropped in on Cheltenham before the only logical choice for many at this point in time would appear to be My Way de Solzen. I can understand why, but I have my reservations about his stamina, as he was starting to wander at the finish of his World Hurdle victory over a 2 1/2f shorter trip.

The entries for the King George are now out, and this gives us probably the best insight so far this season into the illusions, delusions and general gut feel of some trainers.

An exposed horse will not win the Gold Cup, so sifting through the unexposed I'm prepared to head back across the Irish Sea for a bit of value.

Taafe, Mullins and Hughes have sent over some good horses in the past few years, and I wonder whether Charlie Swan is about to step up to the top table too.

He has two horses entered for the King George. Offshore Account and One Cool Cookie. Both look decent enough and progressive. I would suspect that one will be at Kempton on Boxing Day with the other at Leopardstown a couple of days later for the Lexus/ Eriksson.

As One Cool Cookie looks best suited to faster ground I'd hedge that he'll be at Kempton, and there's no reason why he shouldn't put in a decent performance. So I'm going to hunt down some prices now for the big 3m+ chases and hopefully get a tasty price on him for the GC to boot.

amazingly you can have 3.35 KS and 9.2 ED for this race..

highly likely one of these 2 will win the race and both will go off shorter on the day...get on now and trade off later

I'm a huge fan of Denman but think he might struggle to give weight first time out this season to, for example Abragante, next weekend but still think he is a genuine GC contender.

I've been backing him for GC 2008 (mainly e.w.) since last April and can't see him out of the frame at worst!

As much as a fan of Denman as i am, i think Saturday only proved one thing to me and thats if the real KS and ED turn up then its another battle between the two. I think Denman could be booked for third place but i really think the rest might be battling it out for minor honours.

Agree shamardal. Saturday proved just how great KS and ED are.

The rest of the contenders will have to raise their form by at least a stone to even trouble them.

Ruby Walsh has got one hell of a choice to make in March. I try not to get carried away straight after a race until I have had time to think it through, but Denman was fantastic in that Hennessy.

So, now it's really a case of finding the traditional long priced outsider for a place, eh?

Exotic Dancer anyone? Coming from off the pace again at Chelts @ 8/1?
