Thanks for that very full reply, Brett. Most interesting. Yes, I agree that there are "bad eggs" in every sport (not just horse or dog sports, either!) And I guess that the risk of serious injury to a dog is less, and the possible consequences less drastic, than with horses. Nevertheless, if I were an owner I would want to be absolutely sure that I could get vet care for my dog in the shortest possible time, if necessary.

The first race meeting I was at was a tiny place called Insch just outside Aberdeen, round about 1993. "Insch races" used to be a big local event and I've since come to the conclusion that this must have been a flapping meeting.

It was good entertainment, the "track" was in a large field with a small hill in the middle. There were 6 races and in 3 of them the favourite's jockey mysteriously parted company with his mount on the far side of the hill - and this was a flat meeting! Quite a few horses ran in more than one race. There were about 3 bookies, I bet on the rank outside in each race and cleaned up.

It was a great day, also some of the best Scotch pies I've ever had, must be lunchtime...
