Georgian luger competitor Nordar Kumaritashvilli was killed while competing ,not a very good start to the Winter Olympics.
It sounds as though it was his last training session before the olympics starting proper, he was only 21.
RIP, bit of a shame really with not only the loss of his life but the fact this will overshadow the event I'd say. He crashed on his second run aswell but was just shaken up. Hopefully itll be the only incident.
Is 'The Luger' the one where they fly down the ice in the kart? That's terrible. Very dangerous, the downhill skiers and ski jumpers are also putting themsleves under immense pressure, very dangerous game.
RIP, only 21, a year younger than me, no age at all. _________________ Come all ye faithful, come all ye thoroughbreeds, come all ye, come to the FLAT season.
It's desperately sad but I have to say after watching the Luge last night I'm not surprised. It's almost too fast for the camera's to follow. Sliding down a hill on nothing more than a McDonald's tray the margin for error must be minimal.
On a brighter note I'm enjoying watching. My thoughts/questions so far:
Ski Jumping - how do you know if you can do it? Where do novices practice?
Ski Jumping - what happens if you stack it on the run down... is it possible or are the 'ruts' they are in hold them up - if you do fall do you just slide over the edge like a lemming?
Distance Speed Skating - is it the concentration to stay upright that makes them all pull that moronic face as they skate round or are they just all gormless?

it's probably the very tight lycra that is fitted in a crouched position so when they stand up it gets a bit tight!!
have to say BBC terrestrial coverage bit average, highlights/round up prog on in daytime and sometimes live in evening but due to delays not always very interesting. getting quite absorbed by tactics of the curling on red button coverage
it's very sad about the death but it is possibly a consequence of the Olympics being all inclusive, a commentator did make the comment that he wouldn't have been at Worlds as he wasn't good enough. tragedy is that he died because he hit an unprotected metal post outside the track, hard to predict but they have added more boarding now.

I think the BBC's coverage is really good.
I've just been watching some brilliant men's figure skating.
Amy Williams has a good chance of winning us a Gold medal in the skeleton luge.
Some crashing falls in the women's skiing yesterday
I'm quite enjoying these games......what I'm managing to see of them.
I have been following this because it's the only TV channel I have that doesn't depend on knowing a foreign language - the commentary is in Serbo-Croat, but the pictures are from Eurosport!
Women's Downhill did produce some crashing falls, but I think everyone involved was all right - both the men and women reach speeds of over 70mph and the surface is pretty hard, too; if your bindings don't open immediately you are also in danger of bad fractures.
It is correct that the Georgian luger was "inexperienced", and they may introduce some qualifying conditions, as they do in ski jumping. As far as I know from seeing people practice in Switzerland, they start off on (relatively) low hills/jumps and take on the bigger jumps as they get experience.
What has interested me is the difference in body types on display ( ) - the speed skaters are obviously a breed apart, like the cyclists, with all that thigh development, and I think their expressions are just a result of the extreme effort! But if you watch the Nordic disciplines (biathlon, cross country skiing) the competitors are lean and really fit without an ounce of fat on them - the downhillers are positively roly-poly by comparison (or maybe they need a lower centre of gravity....) The biathlon (shooting and crosscountry skiing) is interesting because it's history is in the Russian, Finnish and Nordic armies, where skiing and sniper shooting were essential for most regiments.
That American who won the figure skating (Men's) was amazing.
It is difficult to watch ice hockey because it's hard to see the puck on TV, but it can be quite exciting. Early this morning there was a penalty shoot out between Slovakia and Russia after a 1-1 draw. But I don't know the result because I had to leave for the office!! _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!
