I often ignore all the weird noises coming from the woods behind the house and should take more interest.
I haven't seen a fox but know they are nearby as neighbours have said they are and people have lost chickens.
I hear strange calls and shrieks now and again, sometimes sounds that are so distressing that I have to cover my ears or have been compelled to investigate, I found these links below which explain a few of the noises, the fighting tawny owls are interesting as I am sure I have heard this and also some of the fox noises which sound quite distressing, now thanks to this thread I am better educated about what is happening on my doorstep.
If anyone has any more nature sounds I would be interested to hear them especially hedgehog sounds, we have many around that come into the garden usually they are noiseless but often fall prey to an over enthusiastic soppy greyhound who takes a fancy to them and likes to bring them into the house always dropping them gently onto the kitchen floor when told to, they are never the worse for the experience but must get really fed up being picked up and put back again and how he manages to pick them up without getting a sore mouth is a mystery.
There was a particularly awful screaming noise that I heard one night a few months ago which I haven't forgotten and suspect to be the sound of a hedgehog in trouble, it was the most horrible noise Iv'e ever heard.

Well, that started something!
As far as the Welsh and tractors are concerned, watch it!
Very interesting sites, Seren, thanks for that.
Don't worry about the hedgehog noises - in the spring when they come out of hibernation, listen first of all for a noise like a small pig (which is what they are, of course) going round in a circle and squeaking. This is courtship. Mating involves enough screaming to put the frighteners on anyone (it may be the prickles......) but be assured it is pleasure not terminal agony!
Hedgehogs in the mating season can be terribly noisy.
The greyhound must have a really soft mouth! |
