Big step for me, just cancelled SKY, and have gone for Virgin Media VIP package.  With SKY HD, Broadband, BT, Setanta and insurance for SKY installation, I was paying out about £99 per month. With the new package I get 20meg broadband, all the SKY channels that I get now, extra box, all land line phone calls free 24/7 reduced foreign and mobile calls, SKY+ replaced by V+ for less than £88 per month.  Hope I don't regret the swop, which was pushed forward by having to move the dish, because of scaffolding all round the house, adverse weather conditions influencing the reception, extremely poor customer service and web site.  If any one needs to ever speak to SKY without waiting hours on the phone with their 08702 number try 01506 421884, dealt with in seconds.  The number was found by using saynoto0870.com, excellent for finding alternative numbers to 08 numbers.  Ah well let's see, on the 10/12 whether I have done the right thing.

Hi Papa.

I have Sky at the moment but have had Virgin in the past. Their not bad. The reason I have Sky is that, for what me & my flatmate wanted, they worked out cheaper(this, I gather, is quite unusual but we did want some pretty specific things). Never had V+ so can't comment on that.

You can't get the channel formerly known as the wrestling channel on Virgin and as a big wrestling fan that is a mark against them but there's hardly any wrestling on it nowadays anyway! It's full of mma

JB

I have a mate who has some DVD's going cheap.  Think there is a bit of wrestling on some of them from what I remember!

V+ is better than Sky+ I believe.

I say that because with V+ you can record 2 channels and watch a third at the same time. I know it isn't very often you need to have three seperate channels on the go at the same time but handy never the less when you do.

Also, when Virgin brought out V+ it doesn't make business sense to bring out a worse or equal product. An improved product may entice customers.

They both do the same job. How did we ever get by without it

Jimbob, you are a wonderful person giving me that information, I would be willing to pay twice the cost now.  Sorry, Matty, Harry, James and Alex, Grandad is a naughty boy.

Just tried the same with Setanta, they have stopped two numbers that would have cost just national rate, tight fisted Irishmen. (honest this isn't racist)

The only thing you won't get with Virgin is the interactiveness (is that a word?) of Sky Sports. So say goodbye to Fanzone etc & the game choice on Champions League night.
Other than that I have no complaints with Virgin at all. Pretty good service, especially now Sky Sports News, Sky 1 etc are back on.

I get cheered up everytime someone gives me more information, don't want to, and never have watched Fan "ego"zone, the little box is enough to put you off, and I only watch the champions league match that I want, and interactiveness, if it isn't a word it should be, is not my forte.

Papa2,

I've had Virgin Media for a couple on months now, though am not wedged enough to have the VIP package!!  Have the XL package, which gets me the Setanta/RacingUk channels and I also have V+.  As someone mentioned further up, V+ is really good in that the box has 3 tuners, allowing you to record 2 channels and watch a 3rd.  There's also lots of TV progs that you can watch on Demand e..g. Shameless, Friends, The West Wing and it has BBC iplayer as well.  The internet is reliable and faster than my connection at work.    I've been pretty impressed with it so far.

I have always had broadband but only 2meg from Virgin, I was paying £10 for that, not the full hit price.  Because I kept threatening to jack their broadband in, they always decreased the price.  With the VIP it covers everything I need, like a consolidation of outgoings, TV, broadband and phone.  One of the things that I liked with SKY recording, was that you could set a reminder or record a series of a particular programme, can this be done on cable? I go back, on broadband, to a company called Freeserve, free internet connection and only a 1p a minute with BT.  When Freeserve wanted a subscription I dropped out because, as I told them, their name would be a false name.

Yes, you can set reminders and record a whole series at the touch of one button (and I know this works coz i've tried it!).  You can also pause/rewind live tv, which is handy if you're watching something and the door/phone rings, want to see a goal/race again etc etc.

Cheers Andy, only paused if no one else was in, otherwise I go deaf when the door bell rings, as regards the phone, it is near to me, and I pause the telly, if it is for the wife I just press * then 2 and when she answers tell her who it is and unpause the telly.  The only thing I won't have in  plenty at the moment, are the HD channels, not so many as yet on Virgin, my 37" telly gives a great picture anyway, see how I sneaked  that in, size does matter as regards tellies.

Please can we have a new quiz subject, TV, might give us mere mortals, and square eyes a chance, without fighting for second place.

never had any problems with SKY.Spent years with NTL..shocking service and because Virgin bought them I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

I do pay around £100 per month
which includes phone,Broadband and full packages for 3 sky boxes including one skyplus and one HD box.

If I didn't pay them I would only spunk it on bets
