what has happened to the standard of goalkeeping in the british game?
we now have laughable imports like gomes playing ahead of home grown 'keepers so lord knows how bad oour managers must think they are.
am I the only one who thinks the standard of goalkeeping in the premier league, especially, is way below where it ought to be? Apart from P Cech I can't think of one that really stands out.

Would class Cech as that great. Since his injury he's made a whole host of howlers. Looks better behind a solid defence, so although he is a very good keeper, nothing overly special IMO.
Almunia - average
Gordon - as good as any in the Premiership
Van Der Sar - Past it and needs replacing
Reina - reliable, but not great
Howard - average
Gomes - nightmare
Carson - average
James - average
Myhill - looks a good prospect
Given - OK shot stopper, but not much better
Hart - again good prospect
Someone else can do the rest |

I think Given is the best goalie in the Premiership, and has been for some time.
Wonder if Spurs are having nightmares about getting rid of Robinson now.
I must say, that I do think the overall quality of the so called top teams is poorer than I would expect, but overall across the whole leage it is pretty good, apart from Gomez. How is he after last night, anyone know? _________________ We're tin hard, and we rattle when we're shaken.

Hope Geordie doesn't mind me answering! Yes, Krul is still at Newcastle. He apparently had a great season at Falkirk last season. The season before he played at Palermo for NUFC in UEFA Cup due to injuries to Given and Harper and he played an absolute blinder! We won 1-0 (unbelievably Luque scored, remember him?!) but the man of the match was Krul, he was outstanding. I hope he gets his chance at NUFC in the next year or two or he will look to leave, and this lad has enormous potential. |

The rumours are that Newcastle will flog off Steve Harper to make room for Krul in the first team. |

I am in the minority here, but I really don't think Gomes is that bad a goalkeeper. Sure his form has been atrocious, he has been awful and his decision making hasn't bee too good; but I'm convinced he has a rib injury that he's been hiding and his confidence is low. Brad Freidel went through a similar loss of form when he first arrived at Liverpool and so did David James, again when at Liverpool. What I like about Gomes (yes, there is something to like outside of Arsenal supporters) is that he seems to be fearless about coming off his line and he wants to command his area, something that a good goalkeeper needs to do. The problem with Spurs and their defence is that he's out of form and they have hardly had a settled centre back pairing, Redknapp has a dilemma, does he drop Gomes and bring in their number 2, risking shattering Gomes' already pretty fragile confidence, or does he risk staying with him and leak a shedload more of goals?
Remember how James and Freidel have turned out, I suspect Gomes may turn out the same. |

I'm convinced he's carrying a rib injury, he looks in pain every time he makes a diving save, watch him next time he's on TV. |

it shouldn't be a knock to his confidence if he is left out because he's injured then!
he's clearly not doing himself or the team any favours by playing. he's cost Spurs again today and is making himself look a mug |
