Now this is what I feel the Brits should be proud of - apart from them being self effacing - is the ability to hold a forum where somebody slags them and their country off and they don't get offended, blow their tops and retaliate with insults.

But you're still projecting your own personal views about what constitutes 'the good life' and considering this perspective to be some kind of universal baromoeter.
You're incredibly dismissive of anything that doesn't fit in with your very narrow view of the world. I'm also quite dismissive at times but at least I don't base this dismissiveness on a narrow view of what is good/bad and right/wrong. I accept that different things work for different people whereas you just always seem to presume that unless they view the world in the same way as you then they must be stupid and un-enlightened.
No what i was saying is that alot of the stuff that gets written to why brittain is so great especially when it comes to things like the war are completly untrue and fed to you at school and by our literature which does not make it 100% the truth so unless you are prepared to dig deeper yourself you always believe that rubbish, it does not make someone stupid or unlightened it just means they have just believed what has been told to them a bit i guess like a suicide bomber.
My view of the world is not narrow it is probably wider than most peoples and if what constitutes "the good life" as being a well formed society then i cannot see how it is a bad thing, are you saying having a society where hardly anyone talks to anyone and most peoples days consist of bed, work and staying at home being is a good society to be involved in

No, just the French. The others may have helped a little with digging trenches and running.
The British Tommy is what done for Hitler and i wont hear otherwise.
Havent you watched Dads Army or Blackadder goes Forth, better than any history book.

I actually had this argument so many times when I lived in France...
I often asked why the French (people not government) love America and all things American yet despise the Brits.
I often got the reply 'the Americans saved us from the Nazis'...
not between 1939 and 1942 they bloody well didnt!

In a War surely the soldiers are the nations as if the soldiers of the other nations did not help then Britain would not have been able to stop an Invasion so hence we did not stand alone.

What I like best (apart from a Full English breakfast) is the way Churchill orchestrated the bombing of Pearl Harbour to get the Yanks involved - knowing by that point that Britain needed a supplier to get the job done.
and it's still a secret.
