I'm proud of;

Our innate sense of justice and fair play
Our sporting history - we may not be the best sporting country but we gave the world football, rugby, golf and cricket
Our industrial/democratic history
Our sense of humour
Our modesty
Our tolerance
Our resilience in tough times
Our Scientific/Literature/Economic history
Our armed forces - killing people is kinda bad but if we want to we could kill people better than most
The British Empire - any notions of empire/colonialism are seen as wrong  these days but in the history of empires we were pretty benign and did a lot of good and spread a lot of the above qualities to many backward countries.

I feel lucky to be British rather than proud, I don't really have a sense of pride about being British, I can't explain it really

I don't suppose that makes much sense

The fact that the legacy of music as a whole stems almost solely from this country. The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Stone Roses make me one hell of a proud Brit.

British stiff upper lip.

No matter how bad things were during the war people got on with daily life.

Britain it self.   Still a proud nation borne out by the pride people have in our medals winners in Beijing & our armed forces.

Everything quirky about Britain.

Queueing for things.
Going to the seaside for your hoildays.

Most of all enjoying all the history this land of ours has.

as John Winston Lennon said

"before Elvis there was nothing"

I think we have a fabulous legacy with those you mention, and more, but it all stems from the states

blues and rhythym and blues, then the early stuff of eg chuck berry taken on by elvis and buddy holly

then the soul from tamla and atlantic; the philly soul of the 70s, disco, rap, funk

all american you see - so whilst i am proud of our muisic it dosent almost all stem from the uk, in fact its pretty much all the americans and especially black america

Ok if we can't have music how about words!

Shakespeare, Jane Austen, JK Rowling

The language - the daft way we spell stuff, the silent letters that we chuck in for fun

Now this is what I feel the Brits should be proud of - apart from them being self effacing - is the ability to hold a forum where somebody slags them and their country off and they don't get offended, blow their tops and retaliate with  insults.

It must be their innate self confidence that they are best.

Altogether now

I was waiting for your contribution. As predictable as I expected.

If anyone has been taken in by lies and propoganda YY it is you. Whereas you percieve that many have been taken in by one perspective (western bias, values etc.), it's pretty clear to me that you've been taken in by the other extreme perspective (rose tinted view of undeveloped countries)

Not really because i only really believe strongly in one thing which is where everything else stems from which is society so any country i have been to which has a strong sense of society i like be it western, eastern, developed or underdeveloped and i am afraid society disappeared from this country some time ago

But you're still projecting your own personal views about what constitutes 'the good life' and considering this perspective to be some kind of universal baromoeter. Have you ever considered that people haven't been 'taken in' by anything and are totally concious of 'how 'things are' but just happen to see things differently to you?

You're incredibly dismissive of anything that doesn't fit in with your very narrow view of the world. I'm also quite dismissive at times but at least I don't base this dismissiveness on a narrow view of what is good/bad and right/wrong. I accept that different things work for different people whereas you just always seem to presume that unless they view the world in the same way as you then they must be stupid and un-enlightened.
