BoxingBilly Joe Saunders was AWESOME!
Only an 18yo but dominated an older experienced rival who won bronze at the worlds.
Another tough bout in the next round though against the Cuban

No thanks
My father-in-law used to be one of Randolph Turpin's sparring partners and one day he was demonstrating to my mother-in-law how a particular sparring session had gone and he accidently knocked her out

More like she over cooked his steak and then after dinner he 'suggested' that he 'demonstrated' his skills - "I said RARE!"

Both of the Saunders' were impressive today. The body shots by the guy who stopped his opponent in round 1 were beastly albeit easy to land on an unguarded opponent.

Both out in the next round.
Bit of a shocking day in the British camp all round!

They were good the other day but rubbish today!
At least theres David Price to be hopeful of, right?

David Price will get a bronze at least. Very strange fight - decent Lithuanian opponent went out in the first after pulling a thigh muscle??? First time I have seen this in a boxing match - obviously, fighters will go out because of punches, and sometimes knocks and knee or ankle injuries (rarely) but this looked really odd to me.
Anyone have any opinions?
I think David Price wanted to box all four rounds so as to get a decent tune-up for his next opponent (if I have got the system right he will be fighting for gold/silver).

At least Ireland are set to pick up two medals in the boxing with Paddy Barnes & Kenny Egan into the Semi's.
Not been a good Games for Ireland so far!

No horseracing at the Olympics Hampton - thats the problem ;)
In fairness, i thought Paul Hession did great to finish 5th in his 200m semi. Not too many white men around running that quick.
As for the boxers well they have been just great. Backed Barnes and Sutherland both at 20/1 and i'm on Egan at 11/4 for a decent bet. Egan is a class act and should dispose of this Brit easily in the semi. I really think he will take the gold.
Cheers,
DD.

I did hear the other day that it's the first medals at an Olympic's in about 20 odd years!
To tell the truth I'm often concentrating on the performances of competors from the Mainland to notice how Ireland get up too at these events!
What happened to your lot at the Showjumping? You have a good record at that at major events!

Showjumping team didn't qualify but we have Denis Lynch in the Individual final tomorrow and he has a good chance of a good showing.
The mainland aren't you surrounded by Water as well
In 2004 we won one medal, a gold in show jumping but the bloody horse failed the drug test
In 2000 we won a silver in Athletics.
In 1996 Michelle Smith won 3 golds and a bronze in swimming, these are somewhat tarnished now as she was found guilty 2 years later of tampering with an out of competition drugs test.
Then we're back to 1992 when we last got boxing medals, 1 gold and 1 silver.
We had nothing in 1988 either so you can see now how excited we get with the prospect of any colour medal

Thanks for the brief history of Irish medal winners.
I remember the Smith swimming events & their aftermarth!
If you go back far enough I bet one or two of the Team GB medallists have Irish blood in them so you may be able to count them as one of your own!

Middle distance runner? A few years ago now? Sonia O'Sullivan???? I can't recall whether she won an Olympic medal, but she was good.

Yeah poor old Sonia had it tough at times.
Came 4th in 1992.
In 1996 she got Diarrhea the day of the final after being the quickest in the world that year.
Finally came good in 2000 with a silver behind Gabriela Szabo whose achievements have been questioned since

I'm always surprised that Ireland don't do better in the equestrian events, given the wealth of bloodstock, skills and general horsiness of a lot of the population. Then again, GB's riders never seem to do as well on the Olympic stage as you think they might. I think of Ireland as a more sporty country, than say Italy, who've done quite well this year.

I can see nothing but easy wins for the 2 Irish lads against the 2 Brits. They are just better boxers, especially Egan.
The Sutherland vs. Degale match-up should be a fiery affair. There is no love lost between these 2 - a while back after Sutherland had beaten Degale, Degale wouldn't shake his had, he thought he was robbed. He was not robbed at all it was just sour grapes.
Roll on Friday!

1-1 for me. I think Egan will beat Jeffries no problem, hes looked pretty average. Degale however has improved as a boxer since his last match up with Sutherland where they both took standing counts. It really could go either way in that one but im going to say the brit!

Thank you RJI and Solerina. At least I will not have my beauty sleep disturbed by having to get up at 2am (the cows protest when I go to the milking shed any earlier than 5.30 - that's the trouble with cows, too early and they moo, too late and they moo even more.....)

1-0 to the Brits. Very easy win for Degale. Was far too quick and had far too many skills for the Sutherland. I think the commentator put it well - "The bull and the matador". Very impressed by Degale there.
I'm sure you'll make it 1-1 though

Yeah Sutherland was totally outclassed, didn't treat him with enough respect i'd say as he'd beaten him 4 times before.

I was a bit surprised, too. I thought Sutherland would have made a better fist of it (! ).

Indeed.
The 2 points for biting looked a bit dodgy
But when Degale gave it back I though level pegging.
Didn't even see his 16 point.

High drama - not a "perfect fight", lot of rough stuff, but Degale held it together admirably under what looked to me like pretty extreme provocation - and I thought the refereeing poor, as well.
Right result - congrats to Degale!

Well done to Kenny Egan on the silver. It was always going to be difficult to beat the Chinese guy in the light heavyweight final, and a congratualtion to Jeffries for the bronze.
