I've smashed into River Liane after that rout at leopardstown today - won with any amount in hand and looks the one to beat now. None of the market leaders look at all convincing in this and i presumed he'd be 5/2 favourite after that win today so i was astonished that we can get 6/1 NRNB with Bet365

Unsurprisingly there has been sustained support for him last night and into today and he is now mostly 4/1 and 9/2 which i still think is good value. I expect him to go off about 5/2 or 11/4 favourite on the day. I had 10pts win @ 6/1 with Bet365 NRNB. Looks a near cert to me.

River Liane is my first Cheltenham bet!!    (I'm allergic to ante-post.)

Did look very impressive yesterday and 6/1 seemed pretty good.

I watched the race yesterday and this one easy, never in doubt. Would'nt you have loved to have known before the race how good that was and also to take the 33/1 available for the Fred Winter before that race yesterday.

I'm not so sure of the form of the race at the weekend, ok so he won by 5 odd lengths but he was getting a serious amount of weight from the main protagonists and IMO the form of the horses he beat isn't that great.

If he was entered at grade 1 level in France he must of been highly thought of, but obviously it's a handicap he's going for and seems to be shouldering a nice weight. Not one for me or a race for me to punt in, but I can see the logic behind backing him !!!

Form of the race at the weekend was very good the 2nd has run up against some top novice hurlders this year and the 3rd is rated 125 so if you take that literally then River Laine is going to be well in running off 124 the weight he was getting was only really weight for age

His win over course and distance was good when beating fantouche, and his run before last was very good. Made in Taipan is a good yard stick and he tried very hard to win that race yesterday and was basically swept aside with ease. I would say he will be very hard to beat aswell.

All of its form is not bad even its last run where you could have said it would have been 5th would have not been that bad in the context of the relevant rating River Laine has to how he beat Made In Taipan, that said i would not back any horse in single figure odds in a Juvenile HCP hurdle it is harder than the triumph there must be at least 100+ rated X flat horses that will line up in this

Interesting thoughts on Made in Taipan. He took a fair few attempts to lose his maiden tag but his run behind Trafford Lad looks solid enough so I can see how people think the form of the race has a solid look to it.

Even though it's only been run 3 times it has the look of a pin stickers race to me. That's why I'll try my best to avoid the temptation of betting in it this year !!!

It is interesting to see that this is top of the list since I have been looking at it for the last hour or so.

Ashkazar has a similar profile to that of previous winners:

Smart flat form at 1m4f+ or proven stayer over jumps like all previous winners
Last time out winner like 2 of the 3 winners
Had exactly 3 runs to acquire a handicap mark like 2 of the 3 winners
Bred by the Aga Khan like 2 of the 3 winners
David Pipe had 2 runners last year that finished 1st and 3rd

I was at Sandown for his last run where Timmy Murphy was forced to make the running and was given an educating ride by letting Bormo come upsides before going on to win by 8 lengths. Ashkazar was 12 lengths in front of Grand Schlem who is as short as 5/1 for the Fred Winter

Before that Ashkazar was 4th behind Franchoek and was not digraced behind the hot favourite for the Triumph. He was given an easy ride once beaten and was clear of the rest.

I have no idea how this race is shaping up but River Liane is at number 52 of a possible 24 runners(assuming its the same number of starters as last year) and so if RL gets ballotted out this will seriously alter the market so I am taking the 10/1 NRNB now, as this will be shorter on the day.

Skanky, looks like they may be considering the Triumph:

Quote:
ASHKAZAR has been installed 5-1 favourite by Totesport to continue the Pipe family's remarkable record in the Sunderlands Imperial Cup at Sandown on Saturday.

Trainer David Pipe has seven possibles from a total of 45 entries in Sandown's valuable handicap hurdle as the Nicholashayne team aim for an eighth success.

And all of his septet - Ashkazar, I'm So Lucky, Laustra Bad, Mamlook, Prince Ary, The Package and Wise Owl - hold engagements at Cheltenham next week.

Last year Pipe junior won the race for the first time with Gaspara, who went on to win a race at the festival and collect a £75,000 bonus put up by the sponsors.

Pipe's father Martin, also Gaspara's owner at the time, saddled the winner of the Imperial Cup four times in the last ten years with Blowing Wind (1998), Polar Red (2002), Korelo (2003) and Medison (2005).

Totesport spokesman Damian Walker said: "Martin Pipe used to farm this race when he was training and we're taking no chances with Ashkazar, especially as the horse was well backed for the Triumph Hurdle with us this morning.

"We cut Ashkazar from 14-1 to 12-1 and if people think he is capable of landing the Triumph then he must have a serious chance on Saturday in a handicap
."

I read that article and thought why would they go for the triumph if they're going for the bonus, it'll be by far the harder of the two 4 year old races to win.

They did the double last year with Gaspara, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried the same trick this year.

I was under the impression that Sunderlands only offered the prize for horses that win the Imperial Cup and another handicap at Cheltenham.

Ashkazar will not win the Triumph but has a fantastic chance of winning the Fred Winter and completing the double.
