Betting has opened on this. Chomba Womba looks good at 6s; she does have good ground form, while Sweet Kiln has yet to travel. Not that any of the prices are generous - these are mares!

Quote:
SWEET KILN, winner of last month's Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown, has been installed favourite for the David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle, which will be run at the Cheltenham Festival for the first time this year.

The nine-year-old, the latest star of the Bowe family operation which has also produced Limestone Lad and Solerina, is a 3-1 chance with Coral to capture the race for Ireland with Chomba Womba, unbeaten under trainer Nicky Henderson this term, a 6-1 chance.

Chomba Womba completed the second of two comfortable victories to date at Sandown on Saturday and was immediately nominated for the new race named after the late champion trainer Nicholson, which is to be run over 2m4f on the Friday of the festival.

Horses with previous festival form feature in the betting including Gaspara, winner of the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices Handicap Hurdle, and Material World, who was second in the Pertemps final.

Material World has yet to run this season and when she returns is not likely to contest the David Nicholson, according to her trainer Suzy Smith.

David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle
Coral: 3 Sweet Kiln, 6 Chomba Womba, Gaspara, 7 Grangeclare Lark, 8 Refinement, 9 Material World, 14 Lounaos, Theatre Girl, 16 Shuil Aris, 20 Blazing Sky, Candy Girl, Helens Vision.

Cheers Rowan,

Gaspara looks interesting for this, course form a plus. If she holds her form till March she would be in with an outstanding chance I think.

I hope Classic Fiddle will run in this race and would be interested in her at an e/w price, but I guess that depends on how she runs in the Lanzarote Hurdle. So far she has not been running in great races, but still has improvement as she is lightly raced. Nice breeding too.

Also does anyone know what has happened to United as I do think 3m at Chelts was too far so this could be ideal.... but not sure whether she has gone to stud??

United was declared out for the season last November:

Quote:
LUCY WADHAM has been dealt a blow with the news that her Ladbrokes World Hurdle fourth United is out for the season. The mare, winner of a Grade 1 hurdle at Punchestown in 2005, has a leg problem.
Wadham said: "We discovered some heat in one of her tendons, which is enough to put her out until next year. It's a blow, as we had high hopes for her."

I believe that the ultimate goal for Classic Fiddle is to go chasing but I would guess that will be next season now.

edited to add - Classic Fiddle has an entry in a mares novice chase qualifier on 16 Jan - I guess she would miss that if she goes for the Lanzarote but shows they are keeping options open. Yard also has Shatabdi in the Lanzarote.

Grangeclare Lark now retired so will no doubt change the betting slightly!

Has to be Theatre Girl. Ran the fav close at Doncaster & the trainer would dearly love to win this race named after his old much missed mentor!

25K @ 1.04 or less.  Refinement seemed to just stop as if he thought he'd won.

Great race though.

Actually - last 4 or 5 strides, McCoy stopped pushing.  Not blaming mind, just stating facts.
